Global Alliance calls for UN convention on rights for older people

The Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People has again called for a legally binding United Nations convention on the human rights of older persons.

Commenting on the UN General Assembly’s 9th Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing in July, the Alliance said the Working Group had “already heard ample and convincing evidence of significant failures of existing human rights instruments and procedures to devote adequate attention to the human rights of older persons, including adequate enforcement”.

The Alliance is a network of 266 organisations worldwide, including COTA Australia. Established in 2011, it was born out of the need to strengthen the rights and voice of older people globally.
