Everyone wants friendly and respectful treatment when they go shopping, buy a meal or use a service. But while lots of Tasmanian businesses and services aim to have great customer service, many older people still feel that they are ignored and belittled by staff because of their age.
Many businesses already strive to be age-friendly businesses without realising it, because at their core, age-friendly businesses are simply about respecting every customer that walks through the door. By actively aiming to better serve older members of the community, age-friendly businesses become a place where all customers, regardless of age, mobility, background or circumstance, can feel valued, respected and safe.
COTA has developed an Age-Friendly Business Toolkit that supports businesses to adopt age-friendly principles and get some ideas about how to better support their customers. This includes general information about what an age-friendly business is, a checklist to assess age-friendliness, Tasmanian and international case studies, and a list of resources for more information.
COTA has also produced an A4 poster that businesses can use to demonstrate their commitment to serving and respecting older customers. This can either be printed by businesses or professionally printed copies can be requested from COTA. We also have a newsletter/email banner available for businesses to use alongside this poster.
