Do you know your aged care rights?

Residents of aged care facilities and people receiving aged care services in their homes have rights. These include the right to:

  • personal privacy
  • be involved in decisions that affect you
  • be treated with dignity and respect
  • good quality care that meets your needs
  • full and effective use of your personal, civil, legal and consumers rights
  • complain and take steps to sort out any problems
  • advocacy support

If you receive Australian Government funded care or services, you have the right to raise any concerns about the care you or someone else is receiving.

Raising concerns you have about the quality of care you or someone you know is receiving isn’t ‘being difficult’. It’s a normal part of service delivery. Raising concerns provides an opportunity for aged care services to become aware of issues, find solutions and improve their care. Click here for tips on how to make an effective complaint.

If you are not happy with the response, you can make a complaint by ringing the Aged Care Complaints Commissioner on 1800 550 552.

Alternatively, if you have a complaint about residential aged care you can seek assistance from Advocacy Tasmania by ringing 1800 005 131 (free call).
